If you’re new to Chicago, or just looking to relocate to a new area, choosing a neighborhood can be stressful! In fact, Chicago is made up of 77 distinct neighborhoods! Here are some tips to help narrow down what area(s) would work for you.
Budget
A good rule of thumb for the pricing in Chicago neighborhoods is that the further North or South from Downtown, the cheaper the rent will be. This also applies to the lakefront- being closer to the lake will be more expensive opposed to being farther West. Do some research online or work with a broker or leasing agent to see which areas fit your budget and requirements.
Proximity to Needs
Determine what you would like to be near. How do you plan to get around the city? Trains, buses, and bikes are common ways people navigate Chicago. Make a list of important location points you’d like to be near, for example, school, work, grocery stores, doctor’s office, etc.
Hobbies & Interests
Because each neighborhood has its own unique “vibe,” you might choose an area based on what there is to do there. Love music? Uptown is home to iconic venues like The Riviera and the Aragon Ballroom. Big baseball fan? You can try Wrigleyville (Cubs) or near Bridgeport (Sox). Love comedy shows? Old Town is home to both Second City and Zanies.
Explore!
You’ll never know if you love a place until you make the effort to check it out. If you can, set aside some time to explore a couple different neighborhoods– walk around and see what it looks like, try out some of the local restaurants and businesses, and decide if it’s right for you!
